Valentine’s Day Nails

14 Feb

Valentine’s Day might be one of our favorite holidays. It’s one of the few times a year when candy comes in the girliest of colors, the best romantic comedies come out around this time, and red lips are a must. This year to honor Valentine’s Day we decided to create a nail look that would tell your Valentine exactly what you’re thinking. Inspired by the Conversation Hearts we all received as kids and still love to this day, these nails say it all.

Step 1) Paint nails with a base coat, then using different colored pastel nail polish paint nails. We used Revlon in Opulent Pink and Sally Hansen in Virtual Violet.

Step 2) Allow nails to dry completely. Use a pink or light-colored nail pen to write messages on each nail. We used Sally Hansen Nail Art Pen in Hot Pink.

Step 3) Allow messages to dry completely then paint nails with a shiny topcoat. We used Sally Hansen Diamond Shine Base & Top Coat.

Silver and Blue Manicure

5 Jan

At ScentsaBeauty we love our nails and are constantly looking for new ways to wear our favorite new shades. This nail look puts a new spin on the at-home French manicure by adding color. A silver base with blue tips, and a layer of glitter create a unique look for your nails. Creating this look is relatively simple but like so many nail looks, can be ruined from lack of patience so take your time and we guarantee you’ll love this look.

Step 1) Paint nails with a clear polish base and let dry. Then add two coats of silver nail polish. We used Zoya in Jules.

Step 2) Allow nails to dry completely. This is important because the tape will smudge nails that aren’t fully dry. Use scotch tape and tape across nails so only the tips are exposed.

Step 3) Paint nails dark blue. We used Essie in Midnight Cami. Allow nails to dry before removing tape, you might need to use tweezers too get all the leftover tape off.

Step 4) Paint a layer of glitter nail polish to create a shimmer effect. We used Essence Colour & Go in Space Queen. Finish with a glossy topcoat and your look is complete. We used Sally Hansen Diamond Strength in Flawless.

What color combo would you use to recreate this look?

Glitzy Witchy Nail Design

25 Oct

As Halloween draws closer and you pick out your costume and makeup look, don’t forget about your nails. We’ve decided to glam up a basic black tip nail that you can wear with any costume. From a witch to a vampire or even a sexy policewoman to a zombie bride, this two-toned glittery nail polish look will look fantastic with any costume. All you have to do is follow the quick and easy steps below.

Step One: Paint nails a pearl white color. We used Ulta’s Glacier.

Step Two: After your polish is dry, drip a black polish like Sally Hansen’s Black Diamond onto a flat surface and use an eye shadow sponge to pat the color on the tips of your nails. Emphasize on the tip and thin color out as you sponge on polish to the center of your nail.

Step Three: Paint over nails with a silver glitter polish, and finish with a top coat to complete the look. We used Make a Comet-ment by Nicole.

We hope you’ve enjoyed this nail polish look. Leave a comment and let us know what you think.

Corset Nail Design

11 Oct

Inspired by the sexy look of a corset, we’ve created a look that is a must-have if you want to spice up your nail polish. It’s perfect for nights out on the town or even the perfect accent to your Halloween costume if you’re going the seductive route this year. It’s simple, easy, and can be done in any color to match your outfit. Follow these easy steps below to achieve this look.

Step One: Pick a light color as your base polish. We chose Sally Hansen’s Diamond Strength Champagne Toast.

Step Two: After your base color completely dries, cut up little strips of scotch tape and stick them vertically on each side of the nail, creating a line down the center where you can paint a stripe. Pick a darker color polish and paint a stripe down the center of your nail. We used Sally Hansen’s Diamond Strength Black Diamond.

Step Three: After your stripe has dried, use a Sally Hansen Nail Art Pen (We used Neon Pink) to draw small bows at the base of your stripe. If you’re unsure how to do so, draw infinity symbols ∞ near the bottom of your stripe. Next, draw two lines from the center of your infinity symbols which curve slightly in opposite directions.  Add a small nail faux diamond to the center for a glittering accent.

Step Four: Using the same pen, draw a vertical Xs from the bow to the tip of your nail in your stripe. The effect will look like a corset ribbon. Also, use another nail art pen and draw dots on the ends of the Xs to make it appear like they are ties. Finish the look with a top coat and you’re good to go.

Graffiti Nail Design

1 Sep

Here at ScentsaBeauty we love manicures and the recent surge in cool nail designs has us trying lots of new looks.  This graffiti style design is one of our new favorites. You can use any colors you like to create the look as long as you finish it with black shatter polish, we used OPIs.  We chose a base of pastels in pink, purple, and white.

1)      Start with clean nails using a little nail polish remover to prep the surface. Paint a thin layer of clear base coat to start. We used Sally Hansen’s Hard as Nails.

2)      Once your base coat has dried, paint your first layer of color diagonally across each nail. Be sure there isn’t too much polish on the brush, and don’t worry if the line isn’t precise, the shattered polish will cover it. We used Sally Hansen Hard as Nails Xtreme Wear in Lacey Lilac.

3)       Now paint the second layer of color. Try switching it up on your nail to vary the design. We used Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear in White On.

4)      Finish nails with the third color, filling in any colorless spots on your nails. We used Revlon Nail Enamel in Pink Chiffon.

5)      Allow nails to dry completely before applying Shatter nail polish. Make three quick strokes vertically across nails using a thick layer of Shatter polish.

6)      Allow the shatter polish to dry completely and finish with a clear topcoat.

Voila!  A funky graphic manicure you can do yourself!  Leave us a comment and let us know what you think.

Sailor Nail Polish Design

4 Aug

Take your nails on a wild adventure to uncharted waters with this cute sailor design, the perfect accent to your summer wardrobe. The cool colors will keep your nails looking fresh, fun, and fabulous. It’s simple and easy to do yourself.

Step One: Choose two nail polishes as base colors for your nails. We chose a pale pink for all the nails except for the ring finger, which we painted in a deep blue. We love Illamasqua’s Muse and Sephora by OPI’s Dear Diary.
Step Two: Use a nail pen in dark blue and draw three horizontal lines across the nails. Next use a white nail pen and draw lines along the tips, like you would do for a French tip. We love Sally Hansen’s Nail Art Pens.

Step Three: Use a hot pink nail polish pen and draw small solid circles on both sides of the blue lines. This will make them look like buttons.

Step Four: Use the white pen to draw an anchor on your blue-painted nail. To get the perfect anchor, start by drawing an open circle in the center of your nail, closest to the tip and then draw a vertical line in the center of your nail. Next, about a centimeter from the bottom of the line, closest to your cuticle, draw a half circle with two arrows on each end. It is reminiscent of a mouth of a smiley face. Lastly, complete the anchor with a short horizontal line between the hook and the open circle.

We hope you enjoy this sailor-inspired nail look! Leave us a comment and let us know.

Water Marbling Your Nails

30 Jun

Summer is the perfect time to experiment with fun techniques in every aspect of beauty. This nail look is exciting, unique, and will make you the feel like the nail expert among all your friends. Water marbling is a nail polish technique that leaves your nails decorated with cool designs that you create yourself, using a cup of water, a stick(orange sticks and kabob skewers work great,) scotch tape, paper towels, and easy to drip nail polish (the runnier your nail polish, the easier it drip.) These steps will show how easy it is to have beautiful and unique nails to accompany all your summer fun.

Note:  Make sure to have all your materials ready before you begin. You may also paint a solid colored base coat for an even polished effect.

Step 1: Use scotch tape to cover the skin around each of your nails. Be careful not to cover any part of your nail or you will have an unpolished spot. This prevents your fingers from being covered in nail polish while you do your nails and also allows for easier clean up.

Step 2: Shake and open the nail polishes you plan to use. It’s best to use multiple colors for a better effect. Also, when choosing your nail polish, remember the more you use, the more difficult it is, and neon and bright polishes need more layers.

Step 3: Using the colors you’ve chosen, place one drop of the first color into the water. It will spread out in the water and create its own ring. Next, drip another drop of a different color nail polish inside of the ring, creating a bull’s eye effect. You can make as many rings as you please, but remember the polish dries quickly.

Step 4: Once you have your desired amount of polish rings, take your stick and create a pattern in the water polish. The design can be whatever you want.

Step 5: After your design is complete, dip your finger into the water, nail side down, so that the design you want can coat your nail.

Step 6: Using the stick, pull away any excess polish and remove your finger out of the water. There may be polish on your skin or the tape, but it can be easily cleaned off later. Continue with each nail, and after finishing, wait a few minutes for your nails to dry to remove tape and clean off any nail polish that got on your skin, using a Q-tip and nail polish remover.
