Product Spotlight-BB Cream

8 Aug

New beauty products come and go, but every now and then a hot product takes the beauty world by storm. The latest product to create a craze among the beauty industry is BB Creams. Also known as “Blemish Balm” or “Blemish Base,” the formula is created to protect and improve skin while providing light coverage. Already a popular item in Asian markets, BB cream has recently developed a following in the West, and larger beauty manufacturers like Garnier and Maybelline are taking notice.

The beauty of BB Cream is really found in the all-in-one function of the product. While the lure of BB Cream is clear, the benefits are debatable. We love it for weekend makeup routines when we want coverage but an application that’s natural and quick. However, BB Cream is still new, and finding a variety of shades can be difficult. Also, be sure to pay attention when purchasing BB Cream; rumor has it some formulas are merely repackaging of tinted moisturizers. If you’re interested in trying BB Creams, you can find them at most beauty retailers and at widely ranging prices. A few brands we love are Garnier, Smashbox, and Too Faced.

Tell us what you think of BB Creams, fad or fabulous??

St. Patrick’s Day Eyeshadow Look

14 Mar

We loved the eye look we created for Saint Patrick’s Day last year so much we decided to share it with you again this year!

With St. Patrick’s Day this weekend, we’ve decided to embrace our green side and create a makeup look for the celebration that is fun and fabulous. We love themed holidays, a day where we can dress up and have a good time, and this makeup look is perfect to accent any green outfit.

The Steps

1. Apply shimmery white eyeshadow to your entire eyelid. We love Polyester Bride by Urban Decay.

2. Brush on gold shimmery eyeshadow from your lash line to your crease. Draw a thin line using the same eyeshadow along your bottom lash line. We love Golden Crown by M.A.C.

3. Using an eyeshadow brush, apply an emerald green eyeshadow, sweeping the color onto your eyelid, continuing past the outer corner of your eye, towards your eyebrow. We love Swimming by M.A.C.

4. Use the same emerald green eyeshadow and draw a thick line under your eye, from the center to the outer edge.

5. Apply glittery false eyelashes to your upper lash line and then line over the lashes with black eyeliner. We love Guilty Pleasure by NYX and Liquid Eye Liner by M.A.C.

6. Apply clover-shaped gemstone stickers and small silver stone stickers around the outer corner of your eyes. You can purchase these from any craft store.

We hope you enjoy this look and have a fantastic St. Patrick’s Day! Leave us a comment and let us know!

The Eyes Have It

8 Feb

Every award season you can count on celebrities bringing their A game, or team we should say. The stars have glam squads to dress and decorate them for awards season, while the rest of us watch in awe. This year the ladies of the red carpet have focused on one feature more than any other, the eyes.  Just Google Emma Stone, Frieda Pinto, or Sarah Michelle Gellar, and you’ll find elaborate smoky eyes and bold liner with minimal makeup accompaniment. So we decided to create a signature Scentsa eye, perfect for the red carpet. To create this look we used shades from the Urban Decay Book of Shadows IV palette.

Step 1) Begin with an eye primer, and apply a shimmery neutral base all over the eye and beneath the brow bone. Using a medium eye shadow brush, blend a dark purple shadow into the crease. Blend the shadow upwards and along the outer corner of the upper lash line.

Step 2) Using a medium eye shadow brush, apply a light gold, shimmery eye shadow to the inner corner of your eyelid and blend out to the center of your lid.

Step 3) Using a thin eyeliner, brush a line on the bottom lash line with a navy eye shadow starting just after the inner corner and creating a small wing at the outer corner of the eye. Apply black mascara to top and bottom lashes. We used Sephora Lash Plumper in black.

Step 4) Finish the look with a neutral lip gloss and bronze cheeks.

What’s in this stuff?

1 Feb

When it comes to makeup and skincare products, reading the ingredients is often an exercise in language. Many ingredients are unpronounceable and unrecognizable. Despite the fact that we put these substances on our skin every day, we often know little about what goes into them. Many products claim to be natural, but how do you know if those ingredients are truly all natural or beneficial. So we thought it’s time to find out for ourselves and give a short glossary of the ingredients commonly found in beauty products. To find the definitions we researched online and referenced Aubrey Hampton’s book What’s in Your Cosmetics?

Parabens-Synthetic chemicals used to preserve cosmetics. Some studies have shown that parabens can mimic the estrogen hormone, which is associated with certain forms of breast cancer. For more information visit the FDA’s website.

Phthalates (pronounced Tha-layts) – Chemical compounds of phthalic acid and are mainly used as plasticizers (substances added to plastics to increase their flexibility, transparency, durability, and longevity). Some studies have shown links between phthalates to birth defects and cancer. The danger in phthalates comes when the plastics begin to breakdown and the phthalates are released into nature.

Triclosan-A bactericide or antibacterial agent. Some studies show this ingredient can alter hormone regulation. So far though, these effects have only been seen in studies on animals. The FDA is currently working on testing the safety of this ingredient in cosmetics.

Dimethicone-Silicone fluid that gives a smooth feel to cosmetics, also acts as an emulsifier and hair conditioner. From the research available online, this ingredient looks perfectly safe.

Octyl Methoxycinnamate (pronounced Ock-til Metho-oxey-sin-naw-mate)-An organic compound, its primary use in cosmetics is to absorb UV-B and UV-A rays from the sun, protecting the skin from damage. It is also used to reduce the appearance of scars. There is some controversy with this ingredient because its purpose is to protect and help prevent skin cancer, but some studies show it could increase estrogen, which is linked to breast cancer.

Trihydroxystearin– Is a combination of glycerin and fatty acids used as an emollient and thickening agent. In cosmetics and personal care products, it slows the loss of water from the skin by forming a barrier on the skin’s surface.

These are just a few ingredients we found in many products. Are there any cosmetic ingredients you’d like to know more about? Leave a comment and let us know!

27 Dec

Ring in the New Year with an eye-popping, sparkling makeup look. New Years is a time to standout from the crowd and try something unexpected, so we decided to create a makeup look using unexpected colors and techniques. Mixing silver with an unexpected dose of pink creates a one-of-kind look for an evening you’ll never forget!

Step 1) Apply base makeup as usual then apply primer to eyelids. We used Smashbox Photo finish lid primer.

Step 2) Using a medium eye shadow brush, apply a silver metallic eye shadow. We used Milani Runway Eyes. Using a blending brush, apply a paler shade of silver to blend the color  to just under the brow bone.

Step 3) Add depth to the eyes by applying a deep silver shadow in the middle of the eyelid. We used MAC Knight Divine.

Step 4) Using a white eye liner pencil, line the inner rim of the eye along the lower lash line. We used NYX White eye liner.  Apply black mascara to upper and lower lashes.

Step 5) For extra glam, apply full false eyelashes to your top lashes.  Then apply a glitter liner to the top lashes. We used Eye Kandy Ballistic Berry Glitter.

Step 6) Finish the look with a medium blush brush and apply a bronzer to the apples of the cheeks. We used Tarte Mineral Bronzer. Apply a pink lipstick for an unexpected pop of color. We used MAC Girl About Town.

Holiday Party Makeup

13 Dec

Tis the season for holiday parties galore. This time of year you’re likely to find your inbox full of party invitations from the office, family, and friends. So we decided to create a holiday makeup look to suit every occasion. Using a classic party color choice, gold, and adding green along with some fabulous glitter and a glossy pout, is the perfect makeup look to compliment your little black dress.

Step 1) Apply base makeup as usual. Apply gold eye shadow, blending from lash line to brows. Using a small makeup brush, apply green eye shadow to crease and blend upwards. We used Milani Runway eyes.

Step 2) Using a brown eye liner pencil, line your bottom lash line. We used Make Up For Ever in Matte Mocha Brown.

Step 3) Dip a small makeup brush in an eye shadow or glitter seal, and then into glitter and apply to eye. This can be a little messy so go slowly and be sure to let the eye dry before opening. We used Eye Kandy Glitter.

Step 4) To finish the look, apply black mascara to lashes and clear gloss on lips.  We used Christian Dior in DiorShow Mascara and Stila lip glaze Red apple.
