Waxing Tips

26 Jul

As the temperature outside skyrockets, more and more time is being spent in those itsy bitsy bikinis. Whether lying out on the beach or lounging poolside, every girl wants to look her best. Waxing has always been a tried and true method of keeping your skin smooth, which lasts longer then shaving, but comes with a price. After all the pain and money spent on your routine, it’s important to keep up maintenance in-between sessions.  We’ve put together some simple, at-home tips just about anyone can do and afford.

Right Before Your Wax Session

When it comes to waxing, the easier the job is for your esthetician, the easier it is for you. Before you get to your appointment take a warm/hot shower and exfoliate to get the pores open. Scrubbing off old skin cells beforehand will ultimately give you better results. The warm water from the shower softens hair down to the follicle so that it comes off easier.

Right After Your Wax Session

The first few times waxing are the hardest to get through, but don’t worry, it does get easier. Alleviate the burning sensation afterwards by applying a thin layer of Neosporin over the area and let it absorb for at least 10 minutes. Applying right before bed is also a great way to ensure smooth, healthy skin.  Bikini Zone is a great product to keep skin irritation at bay; it’s medicated and designed specifically for the bikini line area. This product can be a little harsh on skin so we recommend using it the day after your session or at least until redness and soreness has gone away.

The most important thing to remember in between waxing, or even shaving, is to exfoliate. Body scrubs with a coarse or sandy texture work great for this. Baking soda is also a great exfoliator and extremely affordable since the average price of a box is under a dollar. When in the shower, before shaving, just pour some baking soda in your hand and rub over the desired area. Exfoliating scrubs remove dead skin cells and allow the newly growing hair to grow in properly, reducing the chances of ingrown hairs and irritation.

Plan to get waxed at least a day or two before being in a bathing suit. This will give your skin time to relax and heal. Avoid working out the day of the waxing session as well, the friction will only exacerbate already tender skin. Sweat also clogs pores, which cause ingrown hairs that not only look unpleasant, but hurt and can become infected.

Treating Ingrown Hairs

Try as you might, ingrown hairs can still pop up. The best way to send these eyesores packing is by cleaning the area with rubbing alcohol and applying Neosporin regularly. Covering the area with a band-aid will protect your clothing from staining and keep the Neosporin where it should be. If the ingrown hair becomes really infected and painful see your doctor, don’t let the infection get out of control.
