Valentine’s Day might be one of our favorite holidays. It’s one of the few times a year when candy comes in the girliest of colors, the best romantic comedies come out around this time, and red lips are a must. This year to honor Valentine’s Day we decided to create a nail look that would tell your Valentine exactly what you’re thinking. Inspired by the Conversation Hearts we all received as kids and still love to this day, these nails say it all.

Step 1) Paint nails with a base coat, then using different colored pastel nail polish paint nails. We used Revlon in Opulent Pink and Sally Hansen in Virtual Violet.

Step 2) Allow nails to dry completely. Use a pink or light-colored nail pen to write messages on each nail. We used Sally Hansen Nail Art Pen in Hot Pink.

Step 3) Allow messages to dry completely then paint nails with a shiny topcoat. We used Sally Hansen Diamond Shine Base & Top Coat.

Step 1) Begin with an eye primer, and apply a shimmery neutral base all over the eye and beneath the brow bone. Using a medium eye shadow brush, blend a dark purple shadow into the crease. Blend the shadow upwards and along the outer corner of the upper lash line.

Step 2) Using a medium eye shadow brush, apply a light gold, shimmery eye shadow to the inner corner of your eyelid and blend out to the center of your lid.

Step 3) Using a thin eyeliner, brush a line on the bottom lash line with a navy eye shadow starting just after the inner corner and creating a small wing at the outer corner of the eye. Apply black mascara to top and bottom lashes. We used Sephora Lash Plumper in black.

Step 4) Finish the look with a neutral lip gloss and bronze cheeks.

Phthalates (pronounced Tha-layts) – Chemical compounds of phthalic acid and are mainly used as plasticizers (substances added to plastics to increase their flexibility, transparency, durability, and longevity). Some studies have shown links between phthalates to birth defects and cancer. The danger in phthalates comes when the plastics begin to breakdown and the phthalates are released into nature.

Triclosan-A bactericide or antibacterial agent. Some studies show this ingredient can alter hormone regulation. So far though, these effects have only been seen in studies on animals. The FDA is currently working on testing the safety of this ingredient in cosmetics.

Dimethicone-Silicone fluid that gives a smooth feel to cosmetics, also acts as an emulsifier and hair conditioner. From the research available online, this ingredient looks perfectly safe.

Octyl Methoxycinnamate (pronounced Ock-til Metho-oxey-sin-naw-mate)-An organic compound, its primary use in cosmetics is to absorb UV-B and UV-A rays from the sun, protecting the skin from damage. It is also used to reduce the appearance of scars. There is some controversy with this ingredient because its purpose is to protect and help prevent skin cancer, but some studies show it could increase estrogen, which is linked to breast cancer.

Trihydroxystearin- Is a combination of glycerin and fatty acids used as an emollient and thickening agent. In cosmetics and personal care products, it slows the loss of water from the skin by forming a barrier on the skin’s surface.

Awards season has officially begun, and as usual everyone is interested in two things: the award winners and the gowns. This year’s the Golden Globes offered an amazing couture buffet that is only a preview of what’s to come.  One look we especially loved was Emma Stone’s. Miss Stone chose a Lanvin dress in a shade of deep purple mixed with red and a distinctive jeweled belt to finish the look. It was both youthful and full on glamorous. In tribute to the award season and Miss Stone’s gorgeous look, we decided to create a nail look with the essence of her gown in mind.

Step 1) Paint nails with a clear base-coat and let dry. Then paint nails an iridescent purple; use as many coats as necessary to create a deep shade. We used Sally Hansen Diamond Strength in Save the Date.

Step 2) Use French manicure white tip guides to section off the bottom of your nails in a half moon shape. This will create a reverse tips look. We used Orly French Manicure White tip guidelines.

Step 3) Paint bottom tips with silver glitter and let dry, then remove finger guidelines. Make sure polish is fully dry before removing guidelines. We used OPI DS Radiance.

Step 4) Apply small craft jewels to the bottom of nails in the center of the glitter. Paint a clear topcoat over nails to secure jewels.  We used Sally Hansen Diamond Strength in Flawless.

Step 1) Paint nails with a clear polish base and let dry. Then add two coats of silver nail polish. We used Zoya in Jules.

Step 2) Allow nails to dry completely. This is important because the tape will smudge nails that aren’t fully dry. Use scotch tape and tape across nails so only the tips are exposed.

Step 3) Paint nails dark blue. We used Essie in Midnight Cami. Allow nails to dry before removing tape, you might need to use tweezers too get all the leftover tape off.

Step 4) Paint a layer of glitter nail polish to create a shimmer effect. We used Essence Colour & Go in Space Queen. Finish with a glossy topcoat and your look is complete. We used Sally Hansen Diamond Strength in Flawless.
